Caddie Woodlawn

Title: Caddie Woodlawn

Author: Carol Ryrie Brink

Summary: Caddie Woodlawn is eleven years old in 1864 in Wisconsin far away from the civil war that is going on in America. She is a tomboy and plays with her older and younger brothers having adventures. They live a pioneer life collecting nuts and berries for their family, spy on Indians, tell tales to each other for entertainment. Caddie doesn't want to grow up to be a lady, but in the end realizes that it isn't scary growing up.

Recommendation: I really liked this book. Caddie was the grandmother of the author and told her these stories. It is a fascinating look at a pioneer family's life and how they had fun together. This book is also a Newberry Medal Award winner.
