Summary: In this sequel to Crispin The Cross of Lead, Crispin and Bear, just recently coming away from being almost killed and gaining their freedom, find themselves being chased by another group of men who feel they were betrayed by Bear. Bear is extremely wounded and Crispin tries to get away from the men searching to kill them. They find an old pagan woman with a disfigured girl in the forest who take them in and help heal Bear. The woman is killed by an angry group of people in a small town and Crispin, Bear, and the girl, Troth must flee again. They head towards the ocean trying to sail to another land to get away, but have more troubles in the end.

Recommendation: I liked this book. The relationship that Bear,Crispin, and Troth have is touching. Bear is so accepting of these children and becomes a father to them both despite the problems they have.
