Crispin: The Cross of Lead

Title: Crispin: The Cross of Lead

Author: Avi

Summary: A story that takes place in the 14th century starts with a thirteen year old boy's mother dying and leaving him all alone in the world where he has nothing and doesn't even know his real name. The feudal Lord accuses him of stealing money from his home, so he goes to the only person he trusts, Father Quinnel, to figure out what to do, and finds out his real name, Crispin from the Father. The feudal Lord is set upon having Crispin killed, so Crispin must leave the town he knows and run away to stay alive. He meets a man called Bear, a traveling minstrel, and continues on his dangerous journey to figure out his identity.

Recommendation: I liked this book. I liked the journey Crispin has with Bear and how their relationship develops into a father/son relationship. This was a Newbery Medal awarded book for children.

Summary: Everyone calls the boy "Asta's son," but when Asta dies he's labeled a thief and forced to flee the only home he's known for 13 years. Through a
series of miracles, he's led to a place and people who can tell him who he
really is and why so many others want him dead.

Recommendation: No - the writing is amazing, and really takes you back in time. However, there are enough obvious references to adult themes that I'm
surprised this was in the local elementary school library.
