Summary: This book is a series of stories showing the struggles and growth of African Americans in the United States. He uses many different voices to link the past and present and to portray how the past has affected the present and caused many of the situations of African Americans.

Recommendation: I would recommend this book for those interested in the study of African American Literature. As a common read, this book is hard to understand in many ways, and I would suggest reading Byerman's study of the book at the same time to help clarify it.
