The Dog Listener

Title: The Dog Listener

Author: Jan Fennell

Summary: When my son got a dog for his birthday, this book was recommended to me by a dog trainer as a way to learn to communicate with the new addition. The author has many years of experience as a dog trainer, and through observing the behavior of domestic dogs, wild dogs and wolf packs, she has identified 4 important "events" through which the animals communicate with each other and establish the dominance order of the pack. This book, with anecdotes and discussion, is intended to give dog owners the understanding of these communication patterns that will allow them to assert their position as the alpha members of the family "pack." Dogs will never learn to speak English,
but with this resource, pet owners can learn to speak "Dog" with some
proficiency.

Recommendation: Definitely. By following the recommendations of this book, the integration of our new dog into our family has been very smooth. Our dog clearly identifies me and my son as the alpha members of his pack, and behaves accordingly.
