Title: Famine
Author: Liam O'Flaherty
Summary: This is a story coming out of Ireland about the time of the Famine. It follows one family in their poverty as the famine hits their town. While poor, they are proud and mostly caring. It's a fascinating look at how people handled their own lives and how they treated those around them. The descriptions of the blight hitting and people's reactions are heartbreaking and vivid.
Recommendation: Yes, but it's a hard book to find. I sometimes wondered how accurate the book was about how families treated each other back then before the famine hit, but since I really have no idea what poverty is like, I can't say how true to life it is. It is also written in 1860's Irish vernacular, so some of it is hard to understand. It took a little bit for me to get into the book (this was actually my second start to the book), but once I got past the beginning I wanted to keep going.
