Faust

Title: Faust, parts 1 and 2

Author: Goethe, translated by Louis NacNeice

Summary: Faust, in a desire to have all experience, sells his soul to the devil. The book is the recounting of their experiences together, Faust's loves, and his eventual redemption.

Recommendation: I would recommend part one of Faust, but not part two. Part two is difficult to decipher, with lots of characters from Greek mythology interacting with Faust. Part one contains the story of Gretchen which many people will be familiar with and which is thought to be the better written half. Part two does have the concluding scenes of Faust's death and redemption, and those are worth reading, so perhaps part one and the final two acts of part two. It is also difficult to get the full Faust experience in translation. If you speak German, read the original.
