Title: The Higher Power of Lucky
Author: Susan Patron
Summary: 10-year-old Lucky is trying to figure out this crazy world. She lives in a very small town (Pop. 43) in California where the only regular events are the 12-step programs at the local Found Object Wind Chime Museum, where she has the important job of keeping the porch clean before every meeting (and sneaks around back to eavesdrop on the meeting). Her mother has recently died and her father is out-of-the-picture. She cares for her Guardian, Brigitte, but is wondering how long she is going to stick around, so she does something daring and bold to get her attention.
Recommendation: I thought this quick-read Newbery winner was very enjoyable and cute. I felt like I was really reading the thoughts of an actual 10-year-old little girl. I think kids around this age would really enjoy this book.

Recommendation: I thought the book was okay. In the book Lucky runs away so that her guardian will miss her and want to stay. I feel there are a lot of books that use this device in stories, but I’m not sure I really want kids thinking it is a valid response to situations in their lives. This book won a Newbery Medal Award for children's literature.
