Title: Homeless Bird
Author: Gloria Whelan
Summary: This book takes place in India. Koly, a thirteen year old girl, is told by her parents that she is at an age where she is ready to marry. Her parents set out to find a husband. When the marriage date is set, Koly is nervous but excited about her future. That is until she discovers that her husband is almost the same age as her and is very sickly. Soon after they are married, her husband dies, and she is left a widow. She is forced to continue living with her in-laws and soon on her own as a widow. Over time she learns to love her new life and even finds happiness for her future.
Recommendation: Absolutely. I loved how this book takes place India where we can learn of the culture of these people. I also love the innocent character that allows us to feel like we are experiencing everything she is. It was easy to feel all of her emotions-nervousness, frustration and eventually
contentment.
