Summary: Maia has lost her parents, and is living at a boarding school. Her lawyer finds a distant relative in Brazil who will take Maia (or at least her money), so she goes on an adventure. The twins who are her cousins are mean and spiteful, and Maia is never able to understand why they are so miserable. She and the governess find ways to explore the beauty of Brazil, escaping the sterile and unfriendly setting of the relative's home.

Recommendation: This is a fun book to read. I recommend it for the picture it gives of true friendship. The conclusion may not be predictable, but you see each character get what he or she deserves.
