Title: Last of the Breed
Author: Louis L'Amour
Summary: Major Joe Mack is a Native American who serves his country. A trap is laid and he is taken as a prisoner to Siberia, where he can be tortured for information. But, the Zamatev, the officer who orders his capture isn't considering that Joe is a Native American who was raised to be strong and fight and live in the ancient ways of his people. Joe escapes and leads the Russian military on a wild ride across the frozen Siberia. He is being tracked by the fierce Yakut native Alekhin who never lets a prisoner escape and he has all sorts of political factions coming at him for their own personal game, but he persists. Along the way he meets friends that help him and makes more enemies. Through it all he slowly reverts back to the ways of his cultural heritage.
Recommendation: This is the first L'Amour books I'd read, and I only read it on a recommendation. I was a little hesitant because I wanted to start with one of L'Amour's "westerns" with gunslingers, cowboys, the works, and this one is a little different, but I ended up really liking it. I like his writing style. It flows fast and smooth. He tells the story from different points of view which keeps the story interesting and rounded. I loved it and wouldn't mind reading it again.
