The River

Title: The River

Author: Gary Paulsen

Summary: Brian Robison is persuaded by survival "experts" from the U.S. government to return to the Canadian wilderness to redo the survival experience. This time so they can study what he did and learn how to teach it. All goes well until the government man, Derek, is incapacitated and Brian must help them both and find a way to safety.

Recommendation: Yes. Very entertaining, a gripping Paulsen book all the way. Even though the premise is very flawed. Having been in the military I can confidently say they don't need any young kid to teach them. But I suspended my disbelief and enjoyed the book very much.

Title: The River

Author: Gary Paulsen

Summary: Brian is urged by U.S. government officials to return to the wild and teach them how he survived his accident the previous year. All goes well until his companion, Derek, gets seriously injured. Brian must then find a way to get both of them to safety.

Recommendation: Yes. It shows the dangers of the wild, as well as many survival skills. I hope I am never in a situation where I must survive under those circumstances. But, if I do find myself alone and in danger, I hope to remember what I have learned about paying attention and not panicking.

Title: The River

Author: Gary Paulsen

Summary: This is a sequel to the award-winning Hatchet, about fifteen-year-old Brian who returns on government assignment to the Canadian wilderness where he was stranded alone after a plane crash two years earlier. You don't have to read the first book to enjoy this one.

Recommendation: Yes. Enjoyed it as a family read.

Summary: About Brian, a boy who survived on his own for two months in the Canadian forest, who shows a government employee how to survive on your own. Everything is great until lightning strikes and Brian has to save the day.

Recommendation: The book was good but not great. It is predictable and by reading the back cover of the book you've pretty much read the book. But I did get to like Brian and I think it is still worth the two hours that it takes to read the book.
