Title: The Seventh Son
Author: Orson Scott Card
Summary: Alvin Miller is the Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and in endowed with certain magical qualities. This book follows the early events of the young Alvin as he learns of his powers and what are proper and improper ways to use them.
Recommendation: Yes, though it is not a very strong stand alone book. It would recommend it so you can get to the later books of the series. Card uses this book to really develop characters and situation for later books.

Title: The Seventh Son
Author: Orson Scott Card
Summary: Seventh Son is the story of Alvin Miller, the seventh son of a seventh son. It takes place in 19th century frontier America--a place where life is hard and magic is real. This is the first book in the Alvin Maker Series, and begins the tale of Alvin's life with his childhood.
Recommendation: I would. It is unlike any fantasy book that I've read. The setting of frontier America, complete with unfamiliar folk magic, is compelling and unique. Card tells a great story; he's done his research, and the book feels like an authentic "tale."

Title: The Seventh Son
Author: Orson Scott Card
Summary: This book takes events just after the American Revolution but with a twist in a different direction. In this world Indians have representation in congress and also their own state. There are still assaults between white and red men. There is also a sort of magic that exists among certain people.
Some people are gifted with certain skills called 'knacks' This story is about a boy, a seventh son of a seventh son. A seventh son was thought to have special gifts or powers. Alvin Jr. has a way with making things work but strong forces are against him and are trying with all their might to bring
Alvin down.
Recommendation: It is an awesome book to read. I look forward to the other books in the series. It has an interesting way of making one think about how things could have been for the states and also about our own skills or gifts or talents we have to contribute to society.

Summary: Imagine the country in the 1800's. Things are a lot like they were in frontier America, but people are just a bit different. In this tale of alternate reality, people have special gifts, or knacks, that help them. Some can cast simple spells, see visions. Into this world, Alvin is born; he is the seventh son of a seventh son, and as such, he has some extraordinary gifts. He also has some determined enemies.
Recommendation: Yes.
O.S. Card has a great writing style. He pulls you into the story. If you're LDS, you'll see some interesting and intriguing historical similarities—and some vital differences.
A great read for adults and older teens.
