A Year Down Yonder

Author: Richard Peck

Summary: A Year Down Yonder is the sequel to A Long Way From Chicago. Mary Alice's father is out of work, so Mary Alice is sent to live with her Grandma Dowdel for the summer. Her summer is filled with many adventures, humorous and touching, that impact Mary Alice in many ways.

Recommendation: I would recommend this book to anyone. It is a quick read and very entertaining. Richard Peck once again successfully brings the years just before WWII back to life with blunt sassiness that is sure to thrill many a reader.

Summary: Mary Alice is being sent down to her Grandma's house in the country because her parents are having hard economic times in the city of Chicago. Mary Alice is not happy about being stuck in a small town, nor about being with her stern and unpredictable grandma. As she spends a year away from home, she has many adventures with her Grandma that eventually changes her mind about how she felt when she first came.

Recommendation: I liked this book. It was a Newbery Medal Award book for children. The things Mary Alice's Grandma does seem harsh and uncaring at first, but Mary Alice comes to realize that her Grandma may have a hard exterior, but she really cares for the people in her small town as well as for her. It was entertaining to read all the things her Grandma does to get along during hard times.
