Recommendation: Like all anthologies, there are some amazing pieces and some less impressive pieces. All of them are useful for teaching the essay and learning about what the essay can do. I can definitely understand why it is recommended and wonder why it is not used more often.

George Washington's Socks
Title: George Washington's Socks
Author: Elvira Woodruff
Summary: Matt and his friends are starting an adventure club. Their first overnight camp out is dedicated to a discussion of George Washington and the crossing of the Delaware. However, simply talking about adventures while sitting in someone's backyard isn’t all that exciting. So the kids decide to take a night hike around Lake Levart. Little did they know that the rowboat they found around the lake's edge would transport them through time and space to the icy Deleware and the dangers of the Revolutionary War.
Recommendation: Yes. Quite often we glamorize great battles and historical events. When, in reality, they are filled with danger and hardships. This book did a wonderful job of detailing how hard life was for the colonists and soldiers during the war and helped us to see that even the enemy wasn't all bad.

The fact that his class is dragging their feet about practicing for the holiday concert doesn't help his mood. Either way, this last holiday concert is sure to be one they will never forget.
Recommendation: Sure. Although I don't agree that teachers should blow up or sit back and stop teaching the kids, I do feel that it is good to let kids learn by doing. When students take ownership for their learning, they make the most growth.

Everything is going great until the pompous movie director is murdered. Hannah Swensen, owner of a local cookie shop, uses her connections and savvy to sleuth out the murderer.
Recommendation: This is the eighth book I've read in the Hannah Swensen series. I have enjoyed all of them very much, and have also enjoyed trying out a few of the yummy recipes that are included in each book. The only thing about this particular one that bothered me a bit was that it took awhile for the murder to happen. It was more than halfway into the book. Otherwise, I enjoyed the usual characters and style of writing by Joanne Fluke.

Title: Time of the Twins

Summary: This novel by Weis and Hickman is the first title in the Dragonlance Legends trilogy. Together with kender Tasslehoff Burfoot and the cleric Crysania, they travel back in time to Istar before the Cataclysm, each pursuing their own goals and
objectives.
Recommendation: I liked being able continue the story begun in the Dragonlance Chronicles, to see what was to become of the brothers Majere. The new character of Crysania added a new wrinkle to the story as well, becoming the same sort of tragically flawed character as Tanis in the Chronicles, but without the self-awareness to know that she is flawed.

She does a wonderful job with the story and really shows many of the struggles of an African American and all others seeking for a place to belong.
Recommendation: I would recommend this book to many ages. It shows the
struggles of finding a place to call home. It is a wonderfully told story of a Mom learning to let her son grow up and learning to find herself in the midst of a culture that she wants so badly to fit into.

Paradise
Title: Paradise
Author: Toni Morrison
Summary: This is about the life of a small town called Ruby. The people here seek to form their own community and are wary of strangers. They don't like people coming or going; however, there is a Convent nearby and the people of Ruby blame their problems on the women who live in this Convent. They say that these women practice witchcraft, yet they are really seeking peace from their own hard lives.
Recommendation: This is an interesting book, but it also has a lot of hard scenes in it. I read it for a class in school; however, it's not one that I'd recommend to a wide audience. It has a lot of violence and innuendos throughout its pages.

The Modigliani Scandal
Title: The Modigliani Scandal
Author: Ken Follett
Summary: The excellent plot involves a rumor of the existence of a valuable painting, long thought to have been destroyed, and sought by various competitors. A hoax, artists, art dealers, collectors, and forged paintings all are involved - burglars too.
Recommendation: I listened to the audio version, and the plot was sufficiently complex to be confusing at times. With hindsight, I probably would have enjoyed it more if I had read it. This is an early Follett, and my first encounter with him. It perhaps is not as polished as many other mystery writers I'm familiar with, but good enough to continue reading his material.

Tender is the Night
Title: Tender is the Night
Author: F. Scott Fitzgerald
Summary: Dick Diver is the husband of Nicole Diver who suffers mentally from a childhood abuse. Dick struggles with their relationship after meeting a young movie star. In the end, it seems Dick's love for Nicole is more of a doctor-ly caring. When Nicole finally wins her emotional battle, there is nothing left to keep them together.
Recommendation: No. One thing I don't like about F. Scott Fitzgerald is that his writing leaves too much to be assumed. I frequently cannot tell whether something is actually happening or if the characters are just thinking about it. I found several quotes that spoke to me, being very true to life. The back of the book says "Fitzgerald was having a difficult time writing (this book)" because of his wife's nervous breakdown and his own drinking problems. Both of which are themes in this book. I was also struck by the amount of immorality, alcohol, etc. that takes places in this book set in the 1920s. I like to think that there wasn't so much of those things in the 1920s, but I've concluded that there has always been social problems, we just have more technology that makes it easy to hear about them. They are talked about more openly today rather than being just mentioned or hinted at.

The Tuning of the World
Title: The Tuning of the World
Author: R. Murray Schafer
Summary: Non-fiction - 1977, 262 pages. The book deals with acoustic anthropology, noise pollution, and acoustic ecology, i.e., the presence of sound in our world - past and present. The short chapter on 'silence' is extremely interesting and is perhaps the highlight of the book. The author is critical of architects who ignore acoustics when designing their structures.
Recommendation: I have mixed feelings about this work. The material is definitely interesting, but my reaction is rather that of going to a promising lecture and encountering a poor speaker. Regardless, the book should appeal to anyone with a serious interest in the phenomenon of sound.

Author: Stuart Kaminsky
Summary: This is the fourth mystery in the Lieberman series. A burglar witnesses a murder. The setting is present-day Chicago and has a Jewish cultural base.
Recommendation: This is an excellent series by Kaminsky, much better than the Toby Peters series. However, I think his Russian-policeman-based Porfiry Rostnikov series is the best. This one has a plot similar to the Lawrence Block 'Bernie Rhodenbarr' series, but is definitely superior. The characters evolve, so the books should be read in order of publication.

The premise boils down the the wise men never would have made it to see their newborn king if not for the strange dreams of a six year-old boy..... and I just can't buy it. I did like the title of the book, though, if only for the idea that dreams put together can make a complete message, so it gets an extra heart.

The Pleasure of My Company
Author: Steve Martin
Summary: Daniel is a 30-something guy living in California whose bewildering neuroses rule his life, having caused him to lose his job and receive state sponsored counseling. Something as simple as stepping over a curb to cross the street paralyzes him, yet he has a heart of gold and does all he can (and some things he can't) to help his neighbors or to impress the woman he has a crush on. Despite his reclusive existence, he somehow manages to have a whole host of adventures, including winning an essay contest, saving a child from abusive harm, "acting" in a TV re-enactment of his neighbor's murder, and yes, living happily ever after.
Recommendation: I recommend this book wholeheartedly to everyone. I read 'Shopgirl' and thought it crude and shallow, so I guess I didn't expect a whole lot from 'The Pleasure of My Company.' I could not have been more surprised to find it not only funny (which I would expect from Steve Martin) but at the same time tender, serious, clever, moving, and very readable. And clean! And I certainly did not expect to be moved close to tears upon reading of a love so pure and clear that it could allow a man to conquer his own personal mountaintops. Highly recommended.

Title: The Cat Who Robbed a Bank
Author: Lilian Jackson Braun
Summary: Quill Qwilleran is a journalist with passing interest in espionage. In other words, he's nosy, but people feel they can talk to him. Unfortunately, the first business guest to stay in the presidential suite is murdered, the assistant is missing, and a local hero is suddenly missed as well. Even more bothersome is Quill's two cats, Koko and Yum Yum. Koko seems to have a psychic connection to the murder case, and keeps trying to give Quill clues. Unfortunately, they're not entirely clear. After all, Koko is a cat.

When Madeline Was Young
Title: When Madeline Was Young
Author: Jane Hamilton
Summary: Mac Maciver is a doctor who is confiding his family story - as he has learned it - to us, his audience. His family was a special case in that his parents did in-house care for his father's first wife - Madeline - after she had a bike accident which resulted in severe head injury sometime in the mid- 50's. Madeline was essentially 'young' Mac's entire life, and he describes what that was like, and what it was like to have a mother that accepting and loving. He also shares how difficult it was to explain his families situation to people as he grew up, moved away from home, dated, and married. And throughout the book, he also shares how his relationship with his cousin Buddy both anchored and changed his life.
Recommendation: I really wouldn't recommend this book. It was an interesting read, but more as an image of family life in the 60's and 70's and the political climate at the time than anything else.

Pride and Prejudice
Title: Pride and Prejudice
Author: Jane Austen
Summary: The basic plot in this classic novel is that Mr. Darcy meets Elizabeth Bennett, and falls in love with her despite her embarrassing social connections. She in turn despises his pride and prejudiced viewpoint. As his love and admiration for her grows, so does her dislike of him (mostly fueled by false impressions and some false information.) However, her good manners prevent her from expressing this dislike right up until he proposes to her, at which point she tells him 'no' and exactly why. He explains himself in a letter, which helps her turn her heart, and they are afterwards thrown together through other circumstances which teach her more and more what a good man he is. Elizabeth ends up completely in love with Mr. Darcy, but doesn't expect him to ever propose again, and you'll have to read it to get the rest!
Recommendation: I would definitely recommend this book. It is a classic which has many spin-offs in modern literature and film. The thing I noticed the most from this read-through was that the timing of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy's relationship was very important. If she had accepted him at first, even her most worthy relatives wouldn't have been a part of their lives. However, by refusing him but retaining his love his heart was softened. Mr. Darcy was then able to grow out of his pride and show respect wherever it was due, not just within a certain social class. By waiting both of them achieved better understanding for one another, and had a deeper relationship because of it.

She also discusses the bond of marriage and how to ensure that it remains strong. Most of all, however, she addresses the great need for simplicity in our busy and complex lives.

Title: Man's Search for Meaning
Author: Viktor Frankl
Summary: Viktor Frankl was a prisoner in a Nazi Concentration Camp in World War 2. This book gives a brief summary of his experience, and focuses mainly on how he was able to survive and thrive in these conditions.
Recommendation: Yes! This is my favorite book! I find it truly fascinating how he discovered the power of our thoughts and attitudes. We, as human beings, are truly empowered or defeated by the very attitudes we choose to have. And this plays a major role in not only our times of great suffering, but also our daily lives.

The Castle of Llyr
Author: Lloyd Alexander
Summary: The third book in the series, Princess Eilonwy is sent to live with a distant king and queen so she can learn to be a lady. Taran realizes that he doesn't want her to go, but he and Gurgi accompany her to Dinas Rhydnant. Taran and Gurgi are to make sure she arrives safely and then return to Caer Dallben. Their arrival in Dinas Rhydnant is more eventful than Taran expected as Fflewddur and Gwydion both show up. By the second day Eilonwy is missing and in terrible danger. And then the companions' adventures begin as they travel through unknown lands searching for Eilonwy and finding all sorts of other things.
Recommendation: Yes, this book has a little more suspense than the second one. I like that Taran is starting to think more, his character becomes more mature and deals with bigger issues than before. He also is becoming more responsible, basically he's growing up. I like the new characters introduced in this book. And I confess, I didn't see the ending coming.
