In his struggles he finds an unlikely ally in the nifl he hates the most.

Recommendation: The story was great. It has swordplay as well as magic, and is an excellent fantasy novel. The underground novel comes to life and makes you wish to be a part of the fight and adventure. The storyline and characters are detailed, the plot is creative. I felt that this book was well-written and engaging, but is clearly the first book of a trilogy (little is resolved in it). This book makes it easy for your imagination to paint the picture of what is happening throughout.

Hearts: 4

George Washington's Socks

Title: George Washington's Socks

Author: Elvira Woodruff

Summary: Matt and his friends are starting an adventure club. Their first overnight camp out is dedicated to a discussion of George Washington and the crossing of the Delaware. However, simply talking about adventures while sitting in someone's backyard isn’t all that exciting. So the kids decide to take a night hike around Lake Levart. Little did they know that the rowboat they found around the lake's edge would transport them through time and space to the icy Deleware and the dangers of the Revolutionary War.

Recommendation: Yes. Quite often we glamorize great battles and historical events. When, in reality, they are filled with danger and hardships. This book did a wonderful job of detailing how hard life was for the colonists and soldiers during the war and helped us to see that even the enemy wasn't all bad.

Hearts: 4

The Last Holiday Concert

Title: The Last Holiday Concert

Author: Andrew Clements

Summary: Mr. Meinert has learned that his job as the chorus director is being cut over the Christmas holidays. The fact that his class is dragging their feet about practicing for the holiday concert doesn't help his mood. When Hart Evans hits him with a rubber band during class time, he blows up and tells the kids that from now on, they are in charge of the concert. Its success or failure is in their hands. Either way, this last holiday concert is sure to be one they will never forget.

Recommendation: Sure. Although I don't agree that teachers should blow up or sit back and stop teaching the kids, I do feel that it is good to let kids learn by doing. Everyone in the town is so excited, and many are cast as extras. Everything is going great until the pompous movie director is murdered. Hannah Swensen, owner of a local cookie shop, uses her connections and savvy to sleuth out the murderer.

Recommendation: This is the eighth book I've read in the Hannah Swensen series. I have enjoyed all of them very much, and have also enjoyed trying out a few of the yummy recipes that are included in each book. The only thing about this particular one that bothered me a bit was that it took awhile for the murder to happen. It was more than halfway into the book. Moved forward in time at the end of the previous novel, Raistlin enlists the aid of his brother, Caramon, and the cleric Crysania in locating the Portal to the Abyss. Meanwhile, Tasslehoff works to escape that dread realm, to return to help his friends.

Recommendation: The book was quite enjoyable, continuing to explore the relationship of the Majere brothers, as well as Crysania's strange fascination with Raistlin. Beginning two years after the War of the Lance, Time of the Twins follows the continuing story of twin brothers Raistlin and Caramon. Together with kender Tasslehoff Burfoot and the cleric Crysania, they travel back in time to Istar before the Cataclysm, each pursuing their own goals and
objectives.

Recommendation: I liked being able continue the story begun in the Dragonlance Chronicles, to see what was to become of the brothers Majere. The new character of Crysania added a new wrinkle to the story as well, becoming the same sort of tragically flawed character as Tanis in the Chronicles, but without the self-awareness to know that she is flawed.

Hearts: 4

Wake

Title: Wake

Author: Lisa McMann

Summary: Janie is a teen who gets sucked into other peoples dreams or nightmares against her will. He finds a group of dead drug traffickers and steals their money (millions of dollars), and then spends the rest of the book being chased by an evil psychopath who works for the drug
lords and the good old county sheriff who just wants the boy to come home safe. It's a story reflecting on the meaning of good and evil.

Recommendation: I would definitely recommend this book. It was hard to get into, and the story was very violent and disturbing, but the message and the philosophies explored were very intriguing. You are Elizabeth Bennett and your mission is to marry prudently and for love! Intertwined in the Pride and Prejudice story are characters from other Jane Austen novels.

Recommendation: I would recommend this book for everyone who loved Choose Your Own Adventure books. Some of the alternate endings are a bit wild but it is fun to have the choices. Of course if you know Pride and Prejudice, you will have no problem fulfilling your mission.

Hearts: 4

Princess Ben

Title: Princess Ben

Author: Catherine Gilbert Murdock

Summary: This is about a princess named Ben who learns to be a princess despite what life throws at her. This is the point where these who-done-it books turn into a wonderful escape into small-town America. Of course, that includes some violent back-history, and this time Koko is communicating through a rare edition of Shakespeare to show Qwill how history is being repeated in the present.

Recommendation: I would recommend this book to those looking for a light read and a relaxing who-done-it. I love Shakespeare, and so I loved all the references to those works in this book. We are introduced to Jim Qwilleran, a one-time celebrated reporter who is at the end of his rope, and will even take assignments covering local artists. But the art scene in this town has people wanting to draw blood, literally. Two stabbings and a fatal fall have Qwill feeling one step behind this mystery, but Koko the cat has extra senses that help him out.

Recommendation: I would recommend this book to those looking for a light read and a relaxing who-done-it. Mrs. Braun does a wonderful job with her secondary characters, and I enjoy the scope and changes that take place in the lead character's life throughout this series. Qwill is looking for peace and quiet, and the chance to perhaps, maybe, sort of start writing a book, but not everything is peaceful in Mooseville, and it isn't just the mosquitoes that are blood-thirsty.

Recommendation: I would recommend this book to those looking for a light read and a relaxing who-done-it. My aunt has read these books for years, and I never picked them up, but I just recently started, and now I want to read them all. I now better understand Lincoln and his magnanimous character as well as the circumstances that lead to the Civil War.

Hearts: 5

For Time and All Absurdity

Title: For Time And All Absurdity

Author: Robert Farrell Smith

Summary: Ian Smith feels that nothing in his life will ever go right. A good, interesting story from begging to end.

Hearts: 4

Hour Game

Title: Hour Game

Author: David Baldacci

Summary: Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, former Secret Service agents are brought back for a new adventure. A serial killer is on the loose in Wrightsburg, Virginia. Sean and Michelle are hired to solve a burglary, but soon find that it is related to the serial killings. They must figure out who the killer is before they become victims themselves.

Recommendation: Yes, I would recommend the book. It is entertaining, but it is not one of Baldacci's best. The multiple characters become confusing at times, and the killing never seems to end. There are too many twists and turns. Despite those flaws, Baldacci is still one of my favorite authors, and even when he is not at his best, his books are worth the read.

Hearts: 3

Clockwork

Title: Clockwork

Author: Philip Pullman

Summary: A novelist named Fritz wrote a story and a character in his story came to the parlor where he was reading it. An apprentice to a clockmaker uses what he says to help him but instead something else quite different turned out happening. It also has what happens in Fritz's story into this. Both of them intertwine with each other.

Recommendation: I'd definitely recommend this book. It's really cool how it's written. The actual story's interesting too. I wouldn't recommend reading it at night though. It gets a little scary at one part in the story.

Hearts: 4

Capt. It is a fascinating read, and Booker writes it in a captivating and informative manner. It connects back and finds that almost all stories can fit into 7 basic plots: Overcoming the Monster, Rags to Riches, The Quest, Voyage and Return, Comedy, Tragedy, and Rebirth.

Recommendation: I would recommend this book anyone interested in writing or the source of our stories. This works well for any age really, but I think it would bore most young readers. Anyone who is well-read will enjoy the connections he makes to other books and stories.

Hearts: 3

All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes

Title: All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes

Author: Maya Angelou

Summary: This is a beautifully written story. Maya writes about her own life; however, she herself says that it's not all true. She writes, in this book, about her time in Africa. She came to the realization that she, and the other African Americans, did not belong in Africa--that America was and is their home. She does a wonderful job with the story and really shows many of the struggles of an African American and all others seeking for a place to belong.

Recommendation: I would recommend this book to many ages. It shows the
struggles of finding a place to call home. It is a wonderfully told story of a Mom learning to let her son grow up and learning to find herself in the midst of a culture that she wants so badly to fit into.

Hearts: 4
